Different options for different lifestyles.

Learn about the different electrified powertrain options and which best suits your personal lifestyle.

Let's start with the basics.

When you think about electrified vehicles (commonly referred to as EVs), you are probably thinking of a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), an automobile that runs purely on electricity and uses a rechargeable battery to power an electric motor. Yet there are actually several types of electrified powertrains available on the market today, like those that combine an electric motor with a conventional internal combustion engine to create a Hybrid. Let’s begin with some terms that are frequently used when we talk about electrified powertrains:

Regenerative Braking

Battery

Together with the electric motor, the battery makes up the core of any electric vehicle. Batteries vary in capacity which influences charging times and reaches of a electric vehicles.

Which kind of electrified vehicle is right for you?

Three main types of electrified vehicles are available on the market today: Battery Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. There also are mild hybrid vehicles and electrified vehicles powered by fuel cells. Hyundai is currently the only manufacturer to offer all major electrified powertrains in production cars.

Battery Electric (BEV).

Emission-free driving is possible with electric vehicles. Because their powertrains consist mainly of an electric motor and a battery, they don’t require much maintenance. Electric vehicles vary in range, but some batteries last for up to 500 km. You should have a charging station close by if you want to go fully-electric.

Hybrid Electric (HEV).

Equipped with both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Depending on the driving situation, cars like the KONA Hybrid switch seamlessly between the electric motor and the conventional engine, reducing fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV).

Enjoy the best of both worlds.
Electric when you want it. Petrol when you need it. If the all-electric range is depleted, the petrol engine takes you as far as you need to – and you can plug in to recharge later.

Fully-electric

Fully-electric vehicles such as the Hyundai KONA Electric and IONIQ 5 don’t use any combustible fuel and driving is emissions-free. Because there is no clutch or gears, costly maintenance is reduced, and acceleration off the line is fast thanks to instant torque. That smooth and fast acceleration makes them a dynamic and exciting drive. Depending on the model, Hyundai offers electric vehicles with a range of up to 507 km.

An EV is the right choice for you if...

the following factors are important to you.

You want to drive emission-free.

Fuel-efficiency is no longer enough for you. You want a car that doesn’t even need an exhaust pipe.

You are mostly driving short distances.

Commuting, shopping, and other short trips make up most of your overall driving time.

You have access to charging stations.

You are willing to install a charging station at home, have one on the street nearby, and/or at your place of employment.

KONA Electric.

Versatile and very fun to drive, the all-new KONA Electric is the first electric compact SUV in Europe. This ground-breaking car combines impressive electric driving range with bold and roomy SUV style – no compromises.

IONIQ 5

Never stop for petrol again. Producing zero tailpipe emissions while providing a thrilling driving experience, the new IONIQ 5 can give you an all-electric driving range of over 500 km on a single charge.

Hybrid

A Hybrid, or Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), is equipped with both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Depending on the driving situation, cars like the KONA Hybrid switch seamlessly between the electric motor and the conventional engine, sometimes utilising both at the same time. A regenerative braking system charges the battery by using the electric motor to decelerate the vehicle and recuperate energy. This stored energy then powers the electric motor to support the engine in acceleration, reducing fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions.

A Hybrid is the right choice for you if...

the following factors are important to you.

You want to save fuel.

It’s better for the environment, it saves money at the petrol station. And it makes you feel good.

You drive longer distances.

Whether you live in a rural area or take frequent road trips, the Hybrid gives you the flexibility you need.

You have no charging stations available.

The Hybrid battery charges automatically while you are driving. You will never have to plug it in anywhere.

Plug-in hybrid

Enjoy the best of both worlds. Electric when you want it. Petrol when you need it. If the all-electric range is depleted, the petrol engine takes you as far as you need to – and you can plug in to recharge later.

A plug-in hybrid is the right choice for you if...

the following factors are important to you.

You want to drive emission-free during short trips.

Emissions are a major concern for you, and you want to do everything to reduce your carbon footprint.

You also need flexibility.

Maybe you live in a rural area, or you frequently drive long distances without being able to charge.

You have access to charging stations.

You are willing to install a charging station at home, have one on the street nearby, and/or at your place of employment.
